Hello,
We have stopped doing produce and never did dairy, but if you are interested in natural meats, look no further. We don't sell retail and you won't see us at a farmer's market except to buy supplies for the family table. Our blog is http://anonymousfarm.org/ where you can learn more. We also blog on local harvest and recently listed on homegrowncow.com... but not sure if that model will work for us. We have pork and beef in freezer quantity only. No pesticides, fungicides or antibiotics on fields or feeds. Child friendly, doctor approved, family farming for the family. We don't regularly do farm tours, but Muller Lane Farms is highly recommended in Rock Falls if you are looking for heritaqge farm tours. We also don't always have time to answer email, so don't be offended f it takes days or weeks to get a response some seasons. Alan is my husband and he can answer farm questions at 815-721-XXXX. Cow? questions from a potential customer

Thank you for your interest, we do have cow and pig for sale, and are willing to discount the quoted beef price.
Unfortunately our Highland herd is just starting and will not be available for meat sales for over a year. We have a remaining Jersey that is 20 months old and approximately 1000 lbs live weight. We would like to find customers for the entire cow before taking it to a butcher though. Processing is a separate fee from the cow sales. The local processors wrap in paper, not plastic. So in answer to your questions:
vacuumed packed? No

How many months along are your cows when slaughtered?
Depends on when we get enough customers.

What do your cattle eat and for how long (After they are weaned do they eat corn their whole life then switch to pure grass at the end or pure grass the whole time)?
They drink their mothers milk until weaned, then are pasture or hay fed. The only grain they may get is for purposes of getting them to come when they are called.

Do you use hormone or antibiotics on your cattle?
No hormones, only antibiotics or other medications if clearly indicated, not as a feed additive. The jersey for sale has never needed treatment. She was not even vaccinated, as she was born on our farm and has not been in contact with any sick animal or injured.

Our family of 8 live on the farm with a conservation reserve outside our door. Berkshire cross heritage pigs; jersy, holstein, and now highland cattle plus miscellaneous poultry free range on our pastures and enjoy organic exempt corn and other feeds grown on site. What we cannot provide is purchased locally without pesticides or antibiotics whenever possible. Meat is processed locally by state inspected butchers. Local delivery can be arranged or you can pick up at the processor.

Custom cut and processed to customer's specifications. Separate processing charge based on cuts or desired preparation. Price varies based on actual weight and processing order.

1/2 pig 75 lbs $325 plus processing = Price / lb is $4.34

Risha, found your pictures of the 2011 snow while looking up the place the house where I was born. The farm was in my family from 1929 until it was sold in 1993. I now live in TN with my wife Brenda. I lived there until 1977 and then my sister, Deloris Meiners, lived there until we sold the farm. Looks like it is being well taken care of.

The Jacobs built our farm house in the 1860s. (written in the cement in the attic... the addition is the main home, the kitchen came first).

Jenny and Mark Clay were the owners between 1993 and 2007 and made many improvements and changes before we started here...

Thanks to everyone who helped make the farm what it is today!

Today Alan went out to check on the water for the animals and called the whole family out to greet our new calf! The Cow that gave birth was just a calf nursing on the old Milk Cow, Nosey, spring 2010. Nosey passed away last winter, leaving her bull-calf... Now a new calf has been born. The unseasonably warm weather lead us to name the new little heifer "Indian" and her mother "Summer"... the first names for our cattle since we lost Nosey. We can't be sure if she is Nosey's grand-daughter... since there were 2 bull calves roaming in the field... And when we get the profits from the steer we just sold, we plan on investing in a Highland calf or cow-calf pair to adjust our growing herd's genetics... Such wonderful lessons we learn on the farm!

We have (we think) sold out on our first harvest of beef. A few have already pre-ordered... but we are taking requests for future orders. We took our first small steer to Galloway Meats & Poultry in Como, IL @ 815-626-0305. He was grass-fed (and more free-range than I intended) which translates to lower in fat and higher omega-3 fatty acids. We do not expose our animals to hormones or offer feed laced with agrichemicals. We will schedule the other 4 calves for processing whenever I can talk Alan into it and they are "big enough". If we don't get pre-orders, I'm considering decreasing or eliminating the herd. It was no fun chasing escaped calves 8 months pregnant while all the boys were at boy scout camp.

Unfortunately, we learned that Galloway's isn't able to process specialty items such as the tripe that was requested by one of our customers.

The only processor I have found that is licenced to do tripe is in Chicago and transporting a steer that far and increased processing costs may be more than is feasable but research can be done on cost estimates and other options if requested.

Noxious Weed Control to allow Diversity and Sustainability

Canadian and Bull Thistles are a problem on our farm, they are pictured above.

On our farm we try to promote the growth of a diverse group of plants and animals to sustain our family and our piece of nature. 49 acres is a lot of land to take care of when you are doing more than monocultures with chemical support. I understand that most farmers grow commodity crops using petroleum based fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides... not us. We have a few antique tractors that run on gasoline or diesel to do the big mechanical work... carrying water tanks to animals, mowing and cultivating... but the real power of our farm is the family who cares for it.

Click on the link to learn of the thistle control project we are involved with. Dan Anderson visited on May 12th, 2009 after Alan had plowed up and disked the pasture that was infested with the invasive thistle. He recommended planting "special effort sudangrass." This was sold out so other than the few pounds he had left, we had to look into alternatives.

Trying to control invasives while keeping diversity and ecosystem health are a challenge. Being involved in the state funded conservation reserve program (CRP) adds other challenges when almost a third of our farm is planted in young trees and has government restrictions as to what we are allowed to do on that portion of our land.

This concerned me a bit, since the Sudangrass recommended is a Sorghum... ?noxious?

Other noxious weeds on the farm not on the Montana or invasive.org list included Multiflora rose, categorized as an exotic weed under the Illinois Exotic Weed Control Act of 1987. We may tackle that and the ragweed specifically in the future.

6/24/09: We bought Japanese Millet to try in place of the Sudan-Sorghum recommendation. In addition to the concern that Sorghum is on the noxious weed list, "All Sorghum Sudans can cause Prussic Acid and Nitrate poisoning in livestock" so... Japanese Millet "It is of significantly finer quality than sorghum sudan or pearl millet, and a little more coarse than oats. It comes on fast, really controls weeds and mellows up the ground".

6/25 few pounds of sudan-sorghum arrived in the mail.

6/27 homesteader's weekend, talked with other farmers who warned of sudan grass toxicity and noxious status... Alan returned from Boy Scout Camp.

6/28 tractor repaired! Tried to spot burn selected thistles south of corn crib in CRP... got overwhelmed, it's like mowing a 2 acre lawn with a tweezers!

The last of the Spring kids have been born. Sad to say we lost a few. In the picture you can see last spring's group first with the green grass. (The plants are just starting to grow, but I needed to see green so I found an old picture to add.) The top two are the kids born last year. Gertrude is the tan one with the white belt. Splosh has the white face & body with black ears and Shirley has the white wiggle on her face. There are a few others that were born before the herd joined our farm last year, but I'm featuring the ones born here. Hansel & Gretel are the next two going clockwise. Then Christian. The bottom 2 photos show the birth of Sun. His littermates were Uniqua and Anders. Frostie is on the bottom left. Mrs. Black is the nanny in the middle who is raising Frostie and Christian. You can see Saddle nibbling on her ear, sad to say Saddle didn't make it. So it seems we have added 9 goats (5 girls, 4 boys) since we started... and the first year has hardly begun.

We tried milking Mrs Black and the other two goats that had delivered at the same time. She had the most milk of the three and took to nursing the little ones on her own. We will let the other females run with the buck to see if late summer brings more kidding.

This year's boys have all been fixed... we don't want any unexpected early kids next winter. Last year's boys will have to be sold or go to the butcher. Any orders?

We had our Spring Kids arrive early this year.

So far 2 sets of twins and 1 survivor from 5 born before we knew 2 does were kidding.
The first set of twins we named Hansel and Gretel. They arrived 1/27/09.
The survivor of the group found 2/18 we named Christian. He spent the night indoors.
The group was born in the common area and the cold or the Billies got 4...
We figured after Hans & Christian, the next boy would have to be Anderson.
Early the next morning, twin girl kids were brought in out of the cold.
They were named Saddle & Frostie. You can see them in the tub with Chris...
Now there are 3 momma goats in the house basement, all pretending not to belong to the 3 kids...
We brought in the next momma to be too, hoping to avoid the cold and the lost bonding time.
3 does with milk, and I wake over and over hearing the kids cry... finally gave in and bottlefed them a little...

The 3 little piggies went to the orchard for fattening up, then two went to Como, Illinois to be processed. One and a half are now in freezer camp on the farm. One is being kept for breeding. Half of one was sold to a repeat customer who visited the farm often during their stay here... Farmer Alan used corn to entice them to follow him where he wanted them to go. Instead of prodding and scaring them, he had very happy animals willing to follow. Contact is the key.

The piglets of last spring are in freezer camp and the next set are weaning from their sow as spring sets in. The hens lay over a dozen fresh eggs daily and only occasionally feed the local hawks and coyotes and coons. Sheep, goats, cows, and our pony share pastures with the chickens, guineas and wildlife. Jerusalem artichokes and grapes are newly planted and berry vines and fruit trees are just starting to bud. We see ring-necked phesants almost daily and muskrats & a blue heron visit our creek.
